Terminated worker caught with arsenal on Texas campus

"See something/Say something" helped avert a possible tragedy at Lamar University in Texas on Monday evening.


Upon becoming alarmed that someone was stalking her on campus, a quick-thinking security guard called for backup.


After help arrived, a recently terminated Lamar University employee Mark Edward Smith, 63, was arrested by campus police officers. Smith was found with two fully loaded AK-47s, five handguns, and a bagful of bullets in his vehicle.

"Say Something" Don't Ignore It...or Think Nothing Will Happen.


Smith has been charged of driving while intoxicated, resisting arrest, and unlawfully carrying a firearm on campus. he has been booked into the Jefferson County Correctional Facility.


According to reports, Smith began working as an HVAC controls mechanic at the university from May 2016.


Then on March 16, 2021, Smith was suspended from his job at the university. On March 22, 2021, Smith was terminated from his job due to something which has been described only as "a personal matter."


This incident helps to underscore the importance of "See Something/Say Something" as a vital mechanism toward preventing school and other forms of workplace violence.
