Broward Sheriff, Superintendent of Schools, Others Sued in Parkland Lawsuit

RE: The Marjory Stoneman Douglas massacre - a 42 U.S.C. Section 1983 federal lawsuit was filed in Florida yesterday naming as Defendants Superintendent Runcie, MSD employee/Safety Monitor Medina, Sheriff Scott Israel & several Broward LEOs including School Resource Officer Scot Peterson,as well as Broward County itself arising out of the 2/14/18 mass shooting in Parkland.

As this is a federal civil rights action not a state court case where damages are typically capped per the 11th Amendment, the Plaintiffs - parents of several students who were present at the time of the shootings and suffered "at least" severe psychological trauma - are seeking punitive damages.

These are damages meant to punish the defendants for wanton behavior. They also seek compensatory damages, reimbursement of attorney's fees and costs, and any other relief the court deems proper. Plaintiffs have asked for a jury trial.
